We went on vacation to Charleston, SC and tried to be a little observant about the gas prices and our mileage. We took the Jeep b/c there were three of us, plus our luggage, and well the truck isn't that great.
The trip was 450mi one way, plus some driving in and around Charleston. Here's the breakdown of what it costs us:
$60 leaving Birmingham, Al - 3.81/gal
$60 just east of Augusta, Ga, - 3.83/gal
$45 to top off before leaving Charleston - 3.87/gal
$30 just east of Atlanta, Ga to get us home - 4.03/gal
Total: $195. Luckily that was split with the other person that went with us, but that was expensive, especially just for fuel in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Afterwards, we figured we were getting right at 20mpg (70-75mph)....very sad.
So today, I put my typical $40 worth fuel in my truck for the week (usually good for a full week w/ no driving on the weekends). This tank has been deemed an experimental tank to find an increase in my mileage. Currently, I have a hypertech effeciency chip in my truck to increase the mileage which has consistantly been putting me between 18-20mpg and that's driving 70-72mph. This morning however, I drove 65mph and pulled into work showing 23.4mpg. There's an improvement.
Unfortunately, as the week goes on, the idling, sitting at red lights, and stop and go will take it's toll...so we'll see.
Man, we need to do something about this. The bad thing is that the value of the truck has been falling b/c of the higher fuel costs.
